06 Edit objects (select, move, delete)
Select objects
Selecting objects in QGIS allows you to mark certain features in a layer for further editing or analysis. There are several methods to select objects:
Activate the Select tool:

- Click on the selection tool in the toolbar
- Select feature:
- Click directly on the feature on the map that you want to select. The feature will be highlighted.
Move objects
Moving objects allows you to change the position of features within a layer. Here’s how to do it:
- Activate edit mode:
- Make sure that the editing mode for the layer is activated. Click on the Toggle editing button in the toolbar or in the layer window.
- Select the Move tool:

- Select the Move tool from the Digitizing toolbar.
- Move feature:
- Click on the feature you want to move. Drag the feature to the new position. You can also move several features at the same time by selecting them first.
- Save changes:
- Click on the Save changes button in the Digitizing toolbar or in the layer window.
- Deactivate edit mode:
- Switch off the editing mode by clicking on the Toggle editing button again.
Delete objects
Deleting objects permanently removes features from a layer. How to delete objects:
- Activate edit mode:
- Make sure that the editing mode for the layer is activated. Click on the Toggle editing button in the toolbar or in the layer window.
- Select the delete tool:

- Select the delete tool from the digitizing toolbar.
- Delete feature:
- Click on the feature you want to delete. The feature will be removed. You can delete several features by first selecting them and then clicking on Delete.
- Save changes:
- Click on the Save changes button in the Digitizing toolbar or in the layer window.
- Deactivate edit mode:
- Switch off the editing mode by clicking on the Toggle editing button again.
By understanding and applying these methods, you can efficiently edit and customize objects in QGIS. Selecting, moving and deleting features are basic tasks that will help you to accurately manage and customize your spatial data.
